Glengarry Mutual Insurance Company is one of forty-five purely mutual insurance companies operating in Ontario. These companies, commonly referred to as "the farm mutuals", are community based and owned by the policyholders. They are run by a board of directors who are policyholders. The directors live in your community and therefore are able to relate to the insurance needs of local home owners, farm and other business operators.

The farm mutuals are members of the Ontario Mutual Insurance Association. The Association was formed in 1882 and almost all of its members have been in existence for over 100 years.

The farm mutuals own their own reinsurance company - the Farm Mutual Reinsurance Plan Inc.. FMRP was the first Canadian-owned reinsurance company when formed in 1959 and is one of a very few Canadian-owned reinsurers in existence today.

The farm mutuals participate in what is called the Fire Mutuals Guarantee Fund through which they all stand behind any one company within the group so that the policyholder’s claims are guaranteed to be paid in the event of disaster.
